Caban CIC

Caban is a Community Interest Company not for profit and is run entirely by a board of voluntary directors who give up their time to keep it running. We still have to run as a business, pay staff and maintain the building, grounds and facilities.

Here are some of the things we are doing to build resilience and futureproof Caban.

Energy Upgrade

With the help of a Welsh Government Smart Local Energy Systems Grant the energy efficiency of the building has been fully upgraded form an expensive outdated system to solar power and battery storage.

Cultivating a strong sense of community pride by improving the welcoming, sustainable, and accessible spaces where residents can gather, work, and celebrate together. The restoration of the passenger lift ensures inclusivity, allowing all members of the community to fully participate, reinforcing our commitment to an equitable and connected Brynrefail. 

By redeveloping the outdoor café space and kitchen, we expand capacity and improve the financial sustainability of the hub for local engagement. These improvements encourage people to come together, strengthening social bonds and ensuring Caban CIC remains a thriving resource for generations to come. 

In recent months we have piloted using unit eight (one of our ground floor, most accessible units) as a community-based space. This project will develop on this work and our tenants and community partners will be actively involved in shaping their surroundings, engaging with history, and contributing to a shared cultural legacy. As this project helps to grow our financial sustainability, we will be able to play a greater role in supporting this kind of community-based initiative in the future.

This initiative empowers residents to take a proactive role in shaping their community. By improving local assets and fostering a space for collaboration and participation, we ensure that Brynrefail remains a vibrant, inclusive, and enduring place where people feel connected, valued, and inspired to engage.
