Project 1
PETE'S EATS, LLANBERIS, UK Dates: 2001-2002 Gross area: 100sqm to 249sqm
Pete' Eats is a famous cafe in climbing circles, where new routes are traditionally recorded. It is here that you can have the 'Big Jim' breakfast if you're brave enough! The existing premises were cramped, and on those rare wet weekends in North Wales the cafe would be bursting at the seams.
The adjoining building was bought in order to expand the business. A new two storey extension was built to the rear to accommodate a larger kitchen and food storage. Additional covers where provided as well as a climbers library and sleeping accommodation. The work was grant aided by the Welsh Tourist Board, and the external work grant aided with money from the Welsh Development Agency and Cyngor Gwynedd under the Town Improvement Scheme

CAPEL BETHESDA,, BETHESDA, UK Dates: 1997-(ongoing) Gross area: 500sqm to 999sqm

The construction of 12 flats on three floors within the shell of a Welsh Chapel, a scheme for the Elderly commissioned by North Wales Housing Association. Listed Building consent was required as it is a Grade II building.
Because of the change of use of the building and that the new structure is independant of the existing, this is in effect a new build project and the full building regulations apply as regards thermal and sound performance.
The structure is a combination of steel and loadbearing masonry within the existing shell with precast concrete floors forming a cellular structure. The Building exceeds the thermal performance required by the building regulations with a SAP rating of 96 to the worst case flat.
The project has been featured in CADW's booklet, Chapels in Wales, as a good example of a change of use.

10no. 4 person houses and 4no. 5 person houses built to Tai Cymru Standards of masonry construction, rendered with a roughcast finish and a slated roof. The houses where to Tai Cymru Standard designs with ramped access to conform to mobility standards. Insulation was of a high order exceeding Building Regulation and Tai Cymru Requirements.
